Industrial growth drives surge in plastic demand in Malaysia

Time:2021-06-29 10:44:39 Author: Click:

With the rapid development of the manufacturing, packaging, and construction industries, Malaysia's demand for plastics is experiencing significant growth. This trend is closely related to domestic economic expansion, increased export demand, and changes in consumption patterns, but it also faces challenges from tightening environmental regulations and sustainable development goals.

1. Main driving factors for the growth of plastic demand

(1) Robust demand in manufacturing and exports

Electronics and Electrical (E&E) Industry: Malaysia is a significant producer of semiconductors and electronic components globally, with plastics widely used in electronic casings, insulation materials, and packaging.

Automotive manufacturing industry: Local and international automakers (such as Perodua, Proton, Toyota) are increasing the use of lightweight plastic components to align with the trend of energy conservation.

Medical and food packaging: After COVID-19, the demand for medical supplies (such as syringes and test tubes) and food packaging (especially export-oriented palm oil and rubber products) continues to grow.

(2) Recovery of the construction industry

The demand for plastic building materials such as PVC pipes, insulation materials, and waterproofing membranes has increased, benefiting from government infrastructure projects (such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL)) and real estate development.

(3) Changes in consumption habits

The takeout economy (GrabFood, Foodpanda) and retail industry (convenience stores, supermarkets) drive the demand for disposable packaging, despite facing environmental pressure.

2. Market data and trends

Plastic production in Malaysia in 2023: approximately 5 million tons, of which about 30% is for domestic consumption and 70% is exported (main markets: China, Singapore, Japan).

Annual growth rate: Plastic consumption is growing at a rate of 4-5%, higher than the global average (around 3%).

Demand for major plastic types:

PET (drink bottles, food packaging)

PP (food containers, medical devices)

HDPE (personal care bottles, pipes)

PVC (building materials, wire insulation)
